Frequently Asked Questions About Confirmation
How do I sign up for Confirmation classes?
You can sign up online for Confirmation by clicking here, or you can call the Zion Office at 816-524-4966 ext 38 to register over the phone.
Where are Confirmation classes held?
Lunch and large group time from 12 to 1 pm is held in the Zion Youth Room downstairs. From 1 to 2 pm, small groups meet in smaller classrooms.
Can adults attend Confirmation classes?
Confirmation classes are designed for 7th-12th grades. Parents of Confirmation students are welcome to sit in on classes, but if you are an adult seeking classes on the basics of the Christian faith, LSUMC offers adult Bible studies and small groups that are designed for you. For more information about adult classes, call the church office at 816-524-4966.
How much does Confirmation cost?
We ask that you give a donation of $65.00 to cover the cost of lunch and to offset the cost of copying materials. As a gift to our students, LSUMC provides an adult study Bible for every student at the beginning of the semester, as well as a congratulatory gift at the end of the semester!
What kind of food is served at lunch?
Good stuff. Think taco bar, chicken strips, mac and cheese, Mr. Goodcents sandwiches, pizza... and of course, the all important dessert... we know what you like!
What if I don't want to eat lunch at the church? Do I still pay the $65.00?
We strongly encourage all students to participate in the meal plan. But if you have a special diet or allergies, you're welcome to bring your own lunch. Food time is social time, and everyone makes friends over food! Most students end up partaking in the food at some point of another - especially the desserts!
What if I can't attend all of the classes?
If you know that you cannot attend all of the sessions, please consider signing up for another semester that suits your schedule. Confirmation is only 13 weeks long, so every class is vital. You are only allowed to miss three (3) classes; if you miss more than three, you will not be eligible for confirmation.
Don't you check school and sports calendars to make sure that there are no big events that Confirmation interferes with?
We apologize in advance for any inconveniences that Confirmation might impose. LSUMC is a busy, active church - this means that there are other factors to consider when scheduling the Confirmation classes, retreat, and service - i.e. religious holidays, weddings, special events, facility availability. We do check all of the school schedules before scheduling classes; however, please understand, we are working with three junior highs and three high schools. Since Confirmation is only 13 weeks and this is a huge part of the Christian faith, please make it your priority. Confirmation is a big deal!
What if my parents are divorced, and I split my time between them?
We strongly encourage parents to work together so that students have the quality experience that is intended. The reason for the attendance requirement is to ensure that students not only learn the Christian faith, but also develop relationships with new friends - this comes through consistent interaction with their Confirmation small group. Please make every effort to participate in Confirmation as it is set up.
For students that live in a household that is outside of the Kansas City Metro area or to discuss any concerns/special family circumstances, please call 816-524-4966 x38 AT LEAST TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE MANDATORY PARENT/STUDENT MEETING.
What if I can't attend the Mandatory Parent/Student Meeting (Week 1) at the beginning, the Retreat, or the Confirmation Service?
If you miss any of these events, you won't be confirmed.
What if my parents want to be mentors?
If your parent wants to be a mentor for the semester, s/he should call 816-524-4966 x38. It is an awesome experience for adults to journey with their students!
What happens at the Retreat?
The Confirmation Retreat is at Camp Wilderness in Lawson, MO. It will begin on Friday night, and we will return Saturday evening. At the retreat, we rehearse the Confirmation Service together and discuss its meaning, learn some final life lessons that need to be heard, discuss the decision to be confirmed with mentors and staff, and engage in a final experience that will be in your memory forever - you'll see.
Can I come late or leave early from the Retreat?
No. The Retreat is required in its entirety.
